Virginia Crime Trends 1997-2006
The DCJS Criminal Justice Research Center recently released a report on Virginia crime trends focusing on the 10-year period 1997-2006.
Highlights of the report include:
- From 1997 to 2006 Virginia's rate of violent crime dropped by 18%, and the rate of property crime dropped by 29%.
- Historically, Virginia's violent and property crime rates have remained below rates for the US and most of the states bordering Virginia.
- Virginia's violent crime rate decreased 1.4% from 2005 to 2006.
- From 2005 to 2006 the burglary rate increased 4.5% although the total property crime rate decreased 6.9%.
