In order to ensure that new local probation and pretrial officers receive pre-service training that is standardized, relevant, timely and sufficient to prepare them for their job duties, the Department of Criminal Justice Services provides ongoing Basic Skills for Local Community Corrections and Pretrial Programs. The successful completion of this forty-hour training during the first six months of employment is mandated by program standards and includes the following segments:

  • Criminal Justice System Overview
  • Street Smart (Officer Safety)
  • Domestic Violence
  • Supervision Theory
  • Minimum Standards for Local Probation and Pretrial Programs
  • Substance Abuse Issues
  • Overview of Pretrial Services
  • Verbal Intervention (De-escalation)
  • Professionalism & Ethics
  • Liabilities Issues
  • Community Service & Restitution
  • Criminal History Investigation Techniques
  • PTCC Toolbox
  • VCIN Certification
  • Courtroom Demeanor
