Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services
Historically, the two grant funding sources used for the hiring of School Resource Officers have been the Edward Byrne Memorial Formula Grant Program (federal funds) and the SRO Incentives Grant Program (state funds). In 2005, Congress combined the Byrne grant program and the Local Law Enforcement Block Grant (LLEBG) program and named it the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. Virginia and DCJS officials are currently deciding how Virginia's portion of JAG money will be distributed. Funds in support of the SRO Incentives Grant Program are in the Governor's preliminary 2007 budget. DCJS will notify all sheriffs and chiefs by letter and through this website when JAG or Incentive SRO grant monies are available through application.
