| Purpose of Funds: |
The purpose of this program is to provide additional resources for the development or expansion of community policing programs in local jurisdictions within Virginia. “Community policing” refers to strategies that build a close partnership between law enforcement agencies and their communities to reduce or prevent crime. These strategies focus on unique neighborhood crime problems to be solved through coordinated efforts. Funds may be used to purchase equipment or improve services in localities. The following is a list of examples of programs incorporating community policing concepts (the list is not intended to be all inclusive):

| Eligibility Requirements: |
Any Virginia county, city, or town which has in place or is initiating a community policing program and which did not receive a Virginia Community Policing grant in the previous fiscal year is eligible. Grant funds may only be used for the projects intended to supplement local efforts to develop or enhance a community policing program. In general, grant funds may only be used for expenses directly related to carrying out the activities described in the grant application. These may include the costs of specialized equipment necessary for the projects, specialized training, and so on. Grant funds may not be used for personnel, construction, land acquisition, purchase of weapons, or basic training. Grants will be awarded for one (1) six-month period, and will not be awarded in consecutive years to the same locality. |
| Match Requirements: | Community Policing funds may be used to pay up to 75% of the cost of an approved project. The remaining funds must be provided in cash by the local unit of government. If an applicant can demonstrate severe financial hardship, the Criminal Justice Services Board may consider waiving all or a portion of the match requirement providing detailed justification is submitted with the grant application. |
