Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services
Classified and wage job vacancies are advertised for a minimum of five(5) working days through the Human Resource Office. Each job advertisement includes the title, department, pay, a brief description of job duties, qualifications and requirements. Any special conditions of employment, such as restricted funding, ending dates, or an alternate work schedule will be stated in the job ad. All current vacancies are online at our website at: http://www.dcjs.virginia.gov/jobs/jobs.cfm and are posted on the state recruiment website at: http://jobs.agencies.virginia.gov/applicants/Central?search=140.
You must apply on-line at: http://jobs.agencies.virginia.gov/applicants/Central?search=140 to be considered for current staff and wage vacancies.
Before applying for an advertised vacancy, you should carefully read the job advertisement to be sure that you are interested in and possess the requirements for the job. Be aware of any conditions of employment - such as ending dates, work schedules, etc. - so that you apply only for the positions in which you are really interested.
For classified staff and wage positions, you should describe in detail all of your training and experience, to include both paid and volunteer work on your application. Ensure that all sections of the application are completed, including selective service, veteran status, and criminal convictions. It is very important that you provide complete and detailed information about your qualifications so we can evaluate your job application.
To further describe your job duties and/or experience, you may attach a cover letter, resume, curriculum vita, and/or other documents to illustrate this experience.
You may visit the Virginia Employment Commission where computers are available for your use. Many public libraries also have computers that may be used.
When you apply for a classified or wage vacancy, your qualifications in relation to the respective job, along with those of all other applicants, will be compared against the knowledge, skills, abilities and other qualifications needed for the position.
The hiring section will contact you if you have been selected for an interview. This may take a few weeks after the job posting closes. Applicants for jobs not selected for an interview will not be contacted.
You may review the status of your application by choosing the "Application Status" link on the job site home page at anytime you log in.
Wage employment: A wage employee is limited to working 1500 hours per 365-day period and is excluded from participating in the state's vacation, retirement, health, and life insurance programs.
Legal Eligibility for Employment: The Department of Criminal Justice Services hires only U.S. citizens and lawfully authorized alien workers. Within the first three days of employment, you will be required to present evidence of your identity and legal authorization to work.
Criminal Conviction Investigation: In order to protect its interests and the well being of its staff, affiliates, and the public, it is the policy of the Department to conduct criminal conviction record check on all selected candidates. Driver's records checks may be conducted on individuals selected for positions requiring the regular operation of a motor vehicle. The determination of either a job-related conviction or falsified conviction information on the application may result in denial of agency employment.
The state application for employment requires an applicant to describe any convictions of a law violation(s), including moving traffic violations, but exclude offenses committed before the eighteenth birthday.
