The JJDP Act grant programs include funding to state agencies and localities for juvenile justice initiatives under Title V and Title II of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act. An additional aspect of this program requires section staff to monitor local jails and detention facilities for compliance with the federal JJDP Act and the Code of Virginia as they relate to the secure confinement of juveniles. The Juvenile Accountability Block Grant program (JABG) provides direct, formula-based allocations to eligible localities.
The purpose of this program is to address the problem of juvenile crime by promoting greater accountability in the juvenile justice system. For more information about JABG grant programs, click here (.htm).
The Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program provides trained and supervised volunteers to local courts to advocate for abused and neglected children.
DCJS monitors these programs for compliance with state regulations, provides training and technical assistance, and administers a state funded grant program. For more information about CASA, click here (.htm).
The Children’s Justice Act program focuses on improving the investigation, prosecution, administrative and judicial handling of child abuse cases.
The Program provides multidisciplinary training and technical assistance to prosecutors, local law enforcement officers, CPS workers, and allied health and mental health professionals. For more information about the Children's Justice Act Program, click here (.htm).
The Juvenile Services Section provides information about topical issues in the form of reports and fact sheets. The Section is responsible for preparing a three-year plan with annual updates for submission to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The plan and updates include a compilation of data from various sources as well as descriptions of departments and agencies involved in the juvenile justice system in Virginia. The Section also prepares the Annual Report of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Advisory Committee that includes information about grants, data patterns, programs, services, and legislative requirements.
