The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to announce Strategic Legal Guidelines for Recognizing and Responding to Threats: Resources for Campus Police and Security. This course will familiarize campus law enforcement officers and security personnel on all risk-based situations with a focus on scene management, evidence preservation, cooperative investigation methods, and reporting strategies that are in compliance with Virginia law.
Distinguish between and comply with civil law vs. criminal law requirements in Virginia.
Recognize and implement the respective roles, responsibilities, and rights of their position.
Recognize and report suspicious activity and behavior characteristics under proper, legally protective procedures.
Understand and implement proper procedures for searches of people, places, and items under both civil and criminal law requirements in Virginia.
Operate and maintain an effective threat management system utilizing command and patrol staff strategies.
Preserve potential crime scenes including scenes involving drugs, weapons, and evidence of sexual assaults.
Utilize effective and legally compliant documentation techniques for more efficient reporting.
This course is being instructed by Dr. John More of Response Law.
Campus law enforcement officers, campus security officers, school resource officers, school security officers, municipal law enforcement, and anyone who regularly works with students in a school or campus setting.
Partial In-service Credit (PIC) for law enforcement officers and security officers will be available.
Transportation, lodging, and meals are the responsibility of the student.
Registration begins at 7:30 AM
Training will be from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
There is no registration fee to attend this training. Pre-registration is required.
Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
Participants must complete a COVID waiver prior to entry into the training site. Participants must also abide by the site's requirements. State guidelines no longer mandate masks to be worn indoors by vaccinated individuals, however, the training location could require more restrictive mask and social distancing guidelines. Please come prepared by bringing a mask. Social distancing is encouraged as determined by CDC guidelines.
