The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is offering a one day workshop titled “High In Plain Sight: Current Alcohol, Drug, and Concealment Trends and Identifiers”, presented by Officer Jermaine Galloway - "Tall Cop Says Stop". 

The instructor, Officer Jermaine Galloway tailors his trainings to each community that he teaches in, and constantly updates his materials to keep up with the current trends. Once in your community, Officer Galloway spends time walking through local malls, convenience stores and retail stores, identifying popular culture alcohol and other items that promote drug abuse. This allows for local and statewide references from Virginia, allowing the community to know what is going on locally as well as nationally. Galloway also covers the impact of legalization. For each person to help prevent youth and adult substance abuse, you MUST know what is going on in your community.

This training is for educators, prevention providers, law enforcement, probation officers, school administration, treatment professionals, and counselors. This training is unique, in that it provides over 70 visual aids for attendees to hold and become familiar with. In today's culture, everything is person-specific and has different meanings to different individuals. Meanwhile, certain items have gained popularity in the alcohol and drug scene - which changes every day.

Topics to Be Addressed

• How to recognize alcohol and drug clothing, alcoholic energy drinks, alcopops;

• Alcohol and drug concealment methods and containers, drug paraphernalia;

• Drug related music and groups, logos, stickers, new technology, youth party tendencies, party games, non-traditional alcoholic beverages;

• Social networking sites;

• Synthetic drugs, OTC drugs, inhalants, concentrates, Ecigarettes, and popular party drugs; and

• Common stash compartments that can be used to hide weapons and other contraband.

Who should attend?

This training is being offered at no cost to K-12 and IHE educators, campus police and security personnel, prevention providers, law enforcement, probation officers, school and campus administration, treatment professionals, counselors, student conduct professionals, prosecutors, residence life staff, and other interested school, campus or community personnel.

Instructor

The instructor for these trainings is Officer Jermaine Galloway.  Officer Jermaine Galloway has been an Idaho law enforcement officer since 1997 and has more than seven years’ experience in youth alcohol and drug education and enforcement.  Officer Galloway currently provides nationwide training to coalition members, law enforcement, educators, youth, counselors, and community members, training more than 200,000 people nationwide through workshops, trainings sessions, and keynote presentations.  He created an alcohol and substance abuse prevention program called the “You Can’t Stop What You Don’t Know Program”.  Officer Galloway provides up to 100 visual aids for attendees become familiar with for quick identification of drug and alcohol related items.  In 2009, Officer Galloway received the national underage drinking law enforcement officer of the year award from the OJJDP (Officer of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention) for his efforts and strategies in underage drinking education and enforcement. In 2010, Officer Galloway received the national “Mickey Sadoff” underage drinking prevention award from MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) for his efforts in education and enforcement.

Partial In-service Credit

Partial In-service Credit for law enforcement and security officers is available.

Travel, Lodging, and Meals

Participants are responsible for their transportation, meals, and lodging arrangements and expenses.

Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m.

Training will run from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Cost and Registration

There is no fee to attend this training. Pre-registration is required.

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.

COVID-19 NOTICES

Participants will be required to complete a Participant Screening and Waiver prior to attending the training. This will be emailed to registrants before the training and will also be available to complete at check-in on the day of the training.

PLEASE NOTE: DCJS is preparing and planning to continue holding training sessions and conferences after a resumption of normal activities. Every effort will be made to hold this scheduled training, however, due to the uncertainty of the progression of the COVID-19, this training may require rescheduling.
