Training by DCJS - Compliance Agent

General Course Information

Applications and fees must be received by DCJS and all application & eligibility requirements must be met prior to enrollment.

DCJS will issue a confirmation to individuals with details regarding training session date & location and any special instructions. You will be scheduled for the next available session if the requested date is full.

Compliance Agent Entry-Level Training (12E)

Application Type: Initial Compliance Agent Certification and Entry-level Training Enrollment form (PSS_CA)

Course Description: Entry-Level training provided by DCJS which makes an individual eligible to be designated as a compliance agent for a licensee.

This is a six (6) hour training session devoted to teaching the individual how to navigate the Code of Virginia and the Regulations Relating to Private Security Services. A 2-hour examination is administered immediately following. You must achieve a score of 80% or higher to successfully complete the course.

If you do not successfully complete the exam the first time, you may take it a second time at our office in Richmond at no extra cost. However, if you fail the retest, you will need to complete all initial training requirements to include application, fee and entry-level training.

Please see the training dates for course schedules. Following review of all application requirements, the department shall assign the applicant to an entry-level compliance agent training session.

Eligibility/Application Requirements :

  1. Be a minimum of 18 years of age;

  2. Three years (3) of managerial or supervisory experience in a private security services business, a federal, state, or local law-enforcement agency, or in a related field

    OR

  3. Five years (5) experience in a private security services business, with a federal, state or local law-enforcement agency, or in a related field.

  4. Be a United States citizen or legal resident alien of the United States.

Submit to the Department:

  1. Initial compliance agent certification and entry-level training enrollment application (PSS_CA) and applicable non-refundable fee;

  2. Fingerprint card, fingerprint processing application (PSS_FP) and applicable non-refundable fee. For more information, view the Fingerprints page.

  4. Please note: you will not be scheduled for training until all applications, fees and documentation are submitted.

Compliance Agent In-Service Training (12I)

Application Type: Compliance Agent In-service Training Enrollment Form (PSS_CT)

Course Description: This course is a four (4) hour training session provided by DCJS required for current compliance agents and focuses on Regulation updates and business audit procedures.

Required to be completed within 24 months of the last completed training and within 12 months prior to the expiration date of an individual’s certification.

Please see the training dates for course schedules. Training fills quickly, on a first come first served basis. Please apply early to allow yourself time to be scheduled for the training date and location you prefer.

Eligibility/Application Requirements:

  • Compliance agents only have 30 days following expiration to submit an application (PSS_CT) & fee, $25 delinquent training fee, AND complete in-service training in order to reinstate.

  • If the above requirements are not met within 30 days following expiration of the current certification, the individual must submit an initial application (PSS_CA) & fee (and fingerprints, PSS_FP & fee if not already submitted within the past 90 days) and take entry-level training.
  • Submit to the Department :

    1. Compliance agent renewal and in-service training enrollment (PSS_CT) application and applicable nonrefundable fee.
