The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to offer an opportunity to attend a half-day workshop titled “Adolescent Brain Development and Trauma.”
Mental health in young children is closely related to their social and emotional development because it includes how they feel about themselves and other people, how they approach problems and challenges, and how they cope with life. Good mental health helps people handle stress, make wise decisions, and get along with others in childhood, and throughout adulthood. However, experiences that children encounter can create stressful reminders that may be detrimental to their mental health. Experiences that persist or get worse over time can be toxic stressors that overwhelm children and make them especially vulnerable to mental health problems. This training session will provide an overview of how traumatic stressors can negatively impact a child’s social, emotional, and physical development and lead to problematic behaviors in the classroom, and how educational professionals, school administrators, and school resource officers can be more sensitive to a child’s individual needs.
This training is being offered at no cost to K-12 school administrators, central office personnel, school security officers, and law enforcement serving in schools.
Law enforcement officers serving in schools and school security officers who complete this training are eligible to receive partial in-service credit hours.
There is no fee to attend this workshop and all training materials will be provided for registrants.
Participants are responsible for their transportation, meals, and lodging arrangements and expenses.
Pre-registration is required. Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
