The Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and the Virginia Community Criminal Justice Association (VCCJA) is sponsoring an Effective Communication and Motivational Interviewing Training with Ray Ferns, Restorative Correctional Services on the following dates: June 1 – 4 (Glen Allen, VA) , July 6 – 9 (Lynchburg, VA), August 17-20 (Hampton, VA) and September 14 – 17 (Richmond, VA). This training incorporates use of the risk/need tools currently utilized by the 10 pilot sites and the Quality Contact Form.

** This training is limited to current EBP Pilot Sites only **

This training will:

1. Provide a 4 day intermediate training curriculum on Effective Communication and Motivational Interviewing Skills that incorporates the use of the standard risk/need assessment (MOST/OST) and Quality Contact Form currently utilized by the 10 pilot sites.


2. Provide training on the following skills: 1) Knowledge and utilization of specific terms and techniques (such as Risk Control vs. Risk Reduction); 2) Responsivity; 3) OARS; 4) Stages of Change; 5) Incentives and Sanctions; and 6) Criminogenic factors.


3. Provide opportunities for participants to practice techniques including role playing and utilizing the Quality Contact Standards Checklist.


4. Emphasize officer competency in utilizing OARS: Open ended questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening and Summarizations.
