Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services
The Virginia Center for School Safety would like to announce upcoming trainings for law enforcement professionals, school security officers, school administrators, and school safety practitioners. These trainings are free and registration is available on our website www.dcjs.virginia.gov/trainingevents.
SafeTALK is a suicide alertness training program designed to fill a risk recognition and referral gap. The gap exists because there are not enough people in most communities who can recognize that a person might be having thoughts of suicide, engage in direct and open talk about suicide with a person at risk, and move quickly to connect that person with someone trained in suicide intervention. This training model is appropriate for practically any adult audience.
Mr. Calvin Nunnally, Sr. is the Suicide Prevention Manager in the Division for Injury and Violence Prevention at the Virginia Department of Health. He has been a public school teacher and administrator. He spent a number of years working in educational television (public broadcasting). In that capacity he trained teachers to integrate educational technology into their lessons. He later became the Director of Educational Services at the television station producing educational programs and coordinating support services to nearly 500 educational institutions in Central Virginia. He has made numerous presentations at the state and national level. In his current position he manages Virginia’s Multi-Site Youth Suicide Prevention/Early Intervention Program and coordinates the activities of nearly 300 suicide prevention trainers within the state and conducting many of the trainings himself.
DCJS is not currently accepting applications for this course.
