School Resource Officer Basic Training

The School Resource Officer (SRO) Basic Training is a four-day (32 hour) training program designed to provide participants with the information necessary to function effectively as a school-based law enforcement officer. School administrators seeking information on the basis for an effective SRO program will also benefit from this training. The goal of this course is to provide a smooth transition from traditional law enforcement to school-based law enforcement.

The training will center on defining SRO roles and responsibilities in a school environment and the importance of developing positive partnerships with students, administrators, staff, and faculty. The course will provide in-depth information on the legal issues that impact school-based law enforcement including search and seizure, the rules governing the exchange of information, and the potential pitfalls for officers to avoid while working in the school setting. Other topics will include information about youth culture, adolescent substance abuse, and suicide prevention. Detailed information on critical incident preparedness and management will be covered. SRO’s will receive training on classroom management and presentation skills. Each officer is required to complete a practical exercise to demonstrate a basic understanding of presentation skills necessary for a SRO.

Through a partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, the Class Action Instructor Certification course will be included in this training. Each law enforcement officer who completes the entire course will receive 32 hours of Partial In-Service Credit (PIC) including 4 hours of legal credit.
