The School Security Officer Certification Training is a four-day (32 hour) training program designed to meet the training requirements for certification as a School Security Officer. Only persons currently employed by a Virginia school district are eligible to attend this training. School administrators or other supervisory personnel wishing to gain information to assist in coordinating a school security officer program are also welcome to attend.
This training will describe the general roles and responsibilities of the typical school security officer in Virginia, the relevant state and federal laws that impact security officers, and liability issues of this assignment. The training will instruct officers concerning the current youth culture, the identification and prevention of adolescent substance abuse, and suicide prevention. This course also outlines the importance of developing effective partnerships with students, law enforcement, administrators, faculty, and staff.
Students who score a minimum of 80% on each of the three mandatory module tests will be certified to work as school security officers for an initial certification period of two years.
This class is provided free of charge by the Virginia Center for School Safety. All necessary training materials will be provided. Lodging, meals and all related travel costs are the responsibility of the attendee. A limited number of scholarships are available to assist with lodging.
