Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (A.S.I.S.T.)

Sponsored by the
Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services
and
Virginia Department of Health

General Description

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, Virginia Center for School Safety in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) will be hosting three training sessions of the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (A.S.I.S.T). Law enforcement officers and school/campus security officers are eligible for 13 Career Development partial in-service credit hours (PIC) for participation in this training. Each session offering consists of two full days of training. Attendance on both days is required.

Just as "CPR" skills make physical first aid possible, training in suicide intervention develops the skills used in suicide first aid.

ASIST is the most widely used intervention skills training in the US. It is a two-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course designed to help caregivers recognize risk for suicide, intervene to prevent immediate harm, and link persons at risk to the next level of care.

ASIST is often used by people in a variety of "front line" positions. It is for all caregivers (any person in a position of trust). It is suitable for school resource officers or other law enforcement, school security officers, school administrators, teachers, and guidance counselors.
