The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and University of Richmond Announce 2009 Basic Virginia Victim Assistance Academy

The Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and the University of Richmond are pleased to announce that they will be co-sponsoring Virginia’s second Basic Virginia Victim Assistance Academy in July 2009.

Virginia is one of 36 states developing or presenting State Victim Assistance Academies. The Academies are modeled after the National Victim Assistance Academy; however, they provide state-specific training in victims issues.

The Academy is designed by a multi-disciplinary Steering Committee, which includes representatives from partners, DCJS and the University of Richmond. Other committee members include representatives from law enforcement, prosecution, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund, the Attorney General’s Office, the Department of Social Services, the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance, the Virginia Network for Victims and Witnesses of Crime, the Department of Corrections, the Parole Board, Virginia Commonwealth University, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI, local victim assistance programs, and crime victims.

Applications for the Basic Academy can be accessed here.

Basic Academy

Advanced Academy Cancelled

In light of recent staffing reductions and some other significant staffing, funding, and workload considerations facing our office, we regret to announce that we will be unable to offer the Advanced Victim Assistance Academy, which had been planned for this summer at the University of Richmond.

Our decision to end our planning for this training event has not come easily, nor without much consideration and discussion among our staff, agency management, our Academy partner, the University of Richmond, and the federal Office for Victims of Crime.

We plan to examine other ways of delivering advanced training in the victim assistance area and will keep everyone posted as we develop our plans.

We remain committed to providing quality training for professionals who work with crime victims and will strive to do our best to provide quality, affordable training.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Note: This project is supported by Grant No. 2006-VF-GX-K026, awarded by the Office for Victims of Crime, Office of Justice Programs, and U.S. Department of Justice.
