The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, in partnership with the Department of Criminal Justice Services, Virginia Beach Department of Human Services, and the Virginia CIT Coalition, is pleased to provide the opportunity to collaborate with subject matter experts, researchers, and practitioners as we examine how we continue to move CIT forward within the context of changing crisis systems.
As CIT’s history in Virginia nears 20 years, it has never been more important to examine the work being done at the intersection of the behavioral health system and criminal justice. As the CIT model continues to grow and work within changing systems, it is critical that we seek to strengthen and expand the ways that our CIT stakeholders can serve the community and our own providers. Resiliency and self-care remain critical to providing the best services to our crisis responders as well as consumers of our services. The CIT conference and training symposium will aim to provide multiple avenues to explore trauma-informed care initiatives, provide insight into lessons learned, and offer updates on research and program development.
This event will include training on subjects including:

This is a training designed for anyone who may be a disaster responder including police, fire, EMS, shelter workers, emergency operations center staff, public health responders, social service workers, etc. The course intends to assist the participants in building resilience against negative impacts of stress and trauma, educate on recognizing symptoms in themselves and colleagues, and knowing how and when to reach out for help.

In Module I: Knowledge, topics covered include:
In Module II: Participants conduct a self-assessment to learn about their personal response to stressful situations. Then participants use this new knowledge to develop an individual, private Personal Preparedness Plan.
