The Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce the 2022 National Threat Assessment Conference for Educational Institutions. With over a decade of implementing threat assessment teams in institutions of higher education and K-12 public schools, DCJS has had the opportunity to join with subject matter experts to learn what works based on research and best practices. The successes and lessons learned in this area have led to a continued search for opportunities for improvement, to share resources, and to pursue better outcomes for the safety of all students, staff, stakeholders, and ultimately for the community.

Topics

The main purpose of behavioral threat assessment is to recognize and respond to concerning, aberrant, or threatening behavior with the goal of diverting individuals from violence to themselves or others. This conference will address threat assessment from a prevention and intervention focus with an emphasis on the latest research, legal requirements, and overcoming challenges in implementation.

Five major themes will be addressed:

  1. Current Landscape in Behavioral Threat Assessment

  2. Recognizing the Warning Signs

  3. Community Threat Assessment

  4. Interrupting the Pathway and Mitigating Threats

  5. Response and Recovery

Dr. Gene Deisinger, Deisinger Consulting

Check-in begins at 7:30 am. Pre-Conference begins at 8:00 am and concludes at 4:45 pm.

This workshop will provide opportunities for participants to learn and engage on topics impacting schools and campuses, while considering the nexus with communities that are not covered in foundational training sessions.  These topics will focus on opportunities for greater collaboration, communication and coordination between schools and campuses where appropriate. Participants will be able to practice application of skills and lessons learned through small group work on case scenarios addressing issues that may impact both schools and campuses. To fully maximize participant experience, it is recommended participants have previously attended basic threat assessment training.

Domestic Extremism and Violent Extremism Awareness

Check-in begins at 7:30 am. Pre-Conference begins at 8:00 am and concludes at 5:00 pm.

The presenter will provide attendees with an introductory overview of numerous domestic terror groups and criminally subversive subcultures present in communities throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States. The training will provide a definition of violent extremism and focus on awareness of individuals and groups that attempt to advance social, political or religious beliefs through force or violence. At the conclusion of the training, attendees will be better positioned to identify racially and ideologically motivated violent behavior and discern between criminal activity and First Amendment protected speech and actions.
