AGENDA | REGISTRATION CANCELLATION FORM | PRESENTERS
The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to offer the “STRENGTHENING CONNECTIONS: Improving Student & Staff Emotional Wellbeing in the Virtual and Real Worlds” Forum on November 29-30, 2022 at the Virginia Crossings in Glen Allen, Virginia.
The purpose of this summit is to support schools and their partners in efforts to provide a positive and safe school climate where students and staff feel supported no matter what their background, and are socially, emotionally, and physically safe to learn and work. Sessions will focus on some of the most necessary components for improving school and campus climate for the well-being of the entire school community. Participants will leave with tools and resources to bring back to their buildings for no/low cost and high impact implementation.
Experience in communities nationwide has shown that a nurturing school climate and uniform discipline practices are key elements of safe, healthy, and high achieving schools. We have learned that the zero-tolerance policies we once thought of as cutting edge simply do not work. They are, in fact, detrimental to the very climate that is needed to sustain learning and provide engagement and attachment for students in school.
Over the course of a day and a half, through a series of engaging keynotes and an opportunity for hands on access to local, and often free resources, participants will be afforded an opportunity to learn about climate, resiliency, mental health, and other important topics, and to share information and network with colleagues from around the state. The ultimate goal is for participants to return to their communities inspired and better equipped to help improve the learning climate.
Summit participants will receive current, research-based information and resources on topics including:
Creating an understanding and empathetic school culture
Helping youth build social-emotional strength
How to recognize and support youth with anxiety and/or depression
Preventing and reducing bullying
Protecting today’s youth from dangers like drugs and alcohol and human trafficking
Supporting those who support students -- much needed resources for schools, law enforcement, and mental health professionals
The role of social media in school climate - on and off school grounds
What the data says about school climate in Virginia
…and much more!
This summit is intended for school division leaders, administrators, student services staff, school resource officers, law enforcement officers, school security officers, clinicians, and prevention specialists, as well as other professionals who serve Pre K-12 students.
Law enforcement officers and school security officers will receive partial in-service credit for completion of this course. PIC hours will be determined at a later date. School division participants may contact their local agency to apply for in-service credit.
