The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce the 2023 National Threat Assessment Conference for Educational Institutions. The 2023 conference will be offered October 23-26, 2023, with pre-conference events on Monday, October 23, and the main conference Tuesday - Thursday on October 24-26. This in-person event will be held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

With over a decade of implementing threat assessment teams in institutions of higher education and K-12 public schools, DCJS has had the opportunity to join with the very best subject matter experts to learn what works best based on research and best practices. The successes and lessons learned in this area have led to a continued search for opportunities for improvement, to share resources, and to pursue better outcomes for the safety of all students, staff, stakeholders, and ultimately for the community.

Topics

The main purpose of behavioral threat assessment is to recognize and respond to various types of concerning, aberrant, or threatening behavior with the goal of diverting individuals from violence to themselves or others. This two-and-a-half-day conference will address threat assessment from a prevention and intervention focus with an emphasis on the latest research, legal requirements, and overcoming challenges in implementation.

Five major themes will be addressed:

  • Current Landscape in Behavioral Threat Assessment
  • Recognizing the Warning Signs
  • Community Threat Assessment
  • Interrupting the Pathway and Mitigating Threats
  • Response and Recovery

Who Should Attend

This conference is highly recommended for national and state leaders, school division superintendents, school administrators, school mental health professionals, teachers, counselors, higher education personnel, threat assessment team members, and school/campus law enforcement and security officers. Anyone with a stake in K-12 school, higher education, or community behavioral threat assessment is encouraged to attend.

Partial In-Service Credit

Virginia law enforcement officers who complete this training are eligible to receive partial in-service credit hours.
