This multidisciplinary conference is sponsored by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, in partnership with the Commonwealth's Attorneys' Services Council, the Virginia Victims Fund, and the Virginia Victim Assistance Network.  The three-day conference brings together law enforcement, prosecutors, victim advocates, child advocates, and other allied professionals to highlight promising practices and emerging issues to effectively respond to domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse in our communities.  The main conference will be held from July 15-17, 2019.  An optional post-conference training will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2019.  The day-long post-conference training will focus on the intersections of trauma, addiction, and mental health.

The conference will include several internationally and nationally renowned presenters such as Adam Foss, Lawrence Simon, Mark Wynn, Joshua Safran, Dr. Gail Stern, Victor Veith, Ugami, Dr. Kermit Crawford, Dr. Louise Stanger, Justice 3D, and the National Network to End Domestic Violence.

To receive the $94/night (+ tax) group rate, you must reserve your room by Friday, June 21st.  Hotel reservation cancellations must be requested within 24 hours of arrival to avoid being charged one night's room + tax.  
The hotel will honor the $94/night rate for the dates of July 14-18, 2019.  Included in the Suite rate, each guest will enjoy a daily complimentary, cooked-to-order breakfast, a complimentary evening reception, complimentary parking, and free wi-fi in their guest room.

The Embassy Suites / Hampton Convention Center offers free parking to all conference attendees.

Partial In-Service Credit & Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE)

Law enforcement officers can receive PIC hours for the training. Final hours will depend on individual daily and session attendance.

It is anticipated that MCLE credit will be available for attorneys.  

Exhibitors / Vendors

Exhibitor/Vendor space will be available at $125 for a standard space.  There is no charge for non-profits.  We are requesting ALL vendors to provide a gift basket for prize drawings during the conference.  Please review the exhibitor/vendor agreement.  If you are in agreement with the terms and conditions stated in the exhibitor/vendor agreement form and wish to apply to become a vendor, please complete the vendor registration application below.  Registration does not guarantee your acceptance as a vendor/exhibitor.  The Department of Criminal Justice Services reserves the right to deny any application.  If your application is denied, you will be provided a full refund.  All payments must be received PRIOR to the conference.

In order to make this conference as accessible as possible, DCJS will be covering the costs of registration for both the main conference and post-conference.  Lunch will be on your own.

If you register but realize you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible, or no later than July 1, 2019. To cancel your registration, email Julia Fuller-Wilson at julia.fuller-wilson@dcjs.virginia.gov. We anticipate having a waiting list for the conference, and your prompt cancellation will allow others to attend.

Intersections of Violence Conference Awards

DCJS Victims Services, along with the Virginia Victim Fund, will be honoring individuals and teams who embody excellence in victim services.  On July 15, 2019, we will be honoring our award recipients at an evening ceremony at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.  We are currently accepting nominations for:

  • Multi-disciplinary Team of the Year: A Multidisciplinary Team that worked together to reach a successful outcome for victims and survivors of crime. Nominations should include each team member’s role in the successful outcome. MDTs include but are not limited to a task force, a child protection team, DV fatality review team, Sexual Response Team, etc.
     
  • Community Collaboration at Its Best: Representatives from three or more agencies who worked together to create a system change benefiting victims and survivors of crime.  Nominations should include each person’s role in creating the positive change.
     
  • Trail-Blazer of the Year: An individual who, or agency that, used new technology, new resources, or a new outlook and thought outside of the box to move their agency or field forward. Successful nominees will have created a system of change that benefits victims and survivors.
     
  • Mentoring for a Better Future Award: An individual who has taken the time and shared his or her expertise to support, guide, empower and uplift others in the pursuit of services to victims and survivors.
     
  • Tenacity/Miracle Maker Award: An individual who did not give up in the face of adversity, but rather problem solved or pushed through boundaries in their service to victims and survivors.

 

Nominations are due to Andi Martin at andi.martin@dcjs.virginia.gov by 5pm EST on June 21, 2019.  Nomination forms and additional information can be found at here.  If you are interested in attending the awards ceremony, please RSVP to tricia.everetts@dcjs.virginia.gov by June 30, 2019.  A social hour with heavy hors d’oeuvre will follow the ceremony. 

Scholarships

Limited scholarships are available for the cost of lodging.  You must apply by May 20, 2019 to be considered.  If you apply for a scholarship, please register for the conference.  Scholarships will be given to law enforcement officers, child advocates, and child and family welfare workers who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance.  To apply for a scholarship, please complete this scholarship form and email it to courtney.meyer@dcjs.virginia.gov along with a paragraph or two in your e-mail demonstrating your need for assistance. You will be notified by May 30, 2019 whether you received a scholarship or not.

Other Conference Details

On-site check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. on July 15th, and the opening session will begin at 8:30 a.m.
