The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to announce Recognizing and Responding to Threats: Resources for Campus Police and Security on June 12–13 in Williamsburg, VA. This two day course satisfies recertification requirements for Campus Security Officers.
Day One: Risk Recognition & Response for Campus Law Enforcement Officers and Campus Security
This training will familiarize campus law enforcement officers and security personnel on all risk-based situations with a focus on scene management, evidence preservation, cooperative investigation methods, and reporting strategies that are in compliance with Virginia law.
Training Objectives:
1. Distinguish between and comply with civil law vs. criminal law requirements in Virginia.
2. Recognize and implement the respective roles, responsibilities, and rights of their position.
3. Recognize and report suspicious activity and behavior characteristics under proper, legally protective procedures.
4. Understand and implement proper procedures for searches of people, places, and items under both civil and criminal law requirements in Virginia.
5. Operate and maintain an effective threat management system utilizing command and patrol staff strategies.
6. Preserve potential crime scenes including scenes involving drugs, weapons, and evidence of sexual assaults.
7. Utilize effective and legally compliant documentation techniques for more efficient reporting.
Day Two: Virginia Fusion Center, All Crimes/All Hazards Intelligence for the Protection of the Commonwealth
Suspicious activity recognition and reporting is critical in mitigating threats from criminal activity, foreign and domestic terrorism, active shooter situations, homegrown violent extremist attacks and other issues. Understanding that the precursor activities leading up to these criminal acts are all similar in nature, law enforcement officers as well as the public need to understand what these activities look like. Working with state and local fusion centers is a key component of dealing with these threats. This training will discuss working with fusion centers and understanding the signs of suspicious activity.
Campus security officers, campus law enforcement officers, school resource officers, school security officers, municipal law enforcement, and anyone who regularly works with students in a school or campus setting
Partial In-service Credit (PIC) for law enforcement officers and security officers will be available.
Registration begins at 7:30 AM
Training will be from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM each day
Transportation, lodging, and meals are the responsibility of the student.
There is no registration fee to attend this training.

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
