Virginia SRO Certification is Here!
The SRO certification standards and eligibility criteria approved by the Criminal Justice Services Board on October 13, 2022, will be fully implemented on July 1, 2023. However, two options have been provided to agencies to obtain SRO certification for law enforcement assigned to schools as SROs prior to the implementation date.
OPTION 1: Certified law enforcement serving as SROs prior to July 1, 2020, without a break in assignment as an SRO, may request a waiver for initial training (SRO Basic) in order to obtain their initial SRO Certification. The waiver process for eligible SROs will be sent out prior to July 1, 2023.
OPTION 2: Law enforcement initially serving as SROs between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2023, and who have previously completed an SRO Basic course but have not yet tested will be eligible to complete an SRO Basic refresher course provided by DCJS, followed by the SRO Certification exam. Testing will occur between July 1, 2023, and September 1, 2023.
We are pleased to announce multiple dates and locations to complete a two-hour refresher training followed by completion of the SRO certification test to meet the requirements under Option 2.
This refresher and testing are only open to those sworn law enforcement officers who have been assigned as an SRO between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2023, and who have already completed the SRO Basic training course.
There is no PIC training credit offered for this program.
There is no fee to attend this workshop. Pre-registration is required.
Participants are responsible for their transportation, meals, and lodging arrangements and expenses.
The testing is completed online while in class.
Participants must bring their own fully charged device (laptop or tablet).
Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
