"Becoming An Even More Effective Leader" - Dr. Richard Leatherman and Captain Steve Neal (Ret), Leatherman-Neal, LLC
Great leaders are not born with all required skills, they learn them. Many times what is learned from past bosses is not what is needed for effective leadership. These two exemplary instructors conduct highly interactive training workshops, using Socratic questions to encourage critical thinking and discussions. They do not lecture. Instead, they determine the participants’ knowledge of the subject, relate the new knowledge to their old experience, and help them apply what they have learned to their jobs.
This course will cover the Foundations of Leadership, Counseling, Coaching - The Lost Art of Leadership, Motivating Your Unit, Mentoring, and Toxic Boss.
*Please note that this session is limited to 30 participants
Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education – Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services
Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education is designed with colleges’ and universities’ unique culture and resources in mind. Training students, faculty and others in higher education settings how to recognize the symptoms of emerging mental illnesses or to assist young adults in a mental health crisis can help lessen the severity and impact of mental illnesses.
The course includes:
· A discussion of campus culture and its relevance to the topic of mental health
· A discussion of the specific stress and risk factors faced by the higher education population
· Applying the ALGEE action plan in a number of scenarios designed specifically for faculty, administration and students
· A review of the mental health resources available on campus and through partnerships in the community
The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, the Virginia Office of the Attorney General, and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, through its Advisory Committee on Campus Sexual Violence, have collaborated to offer a training session on the most up-to-date regulatory requirements, case law, and best practices in conducting institutional disciplinary hearings. The program will feature presentations from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights and college and university counsel from Virginia’s Office of the Attorney General. A highlight of the training will be a hands-on session in which facilitators will conduct a mock disciplinary hearing to demonstrate examples of difficult issues that must be managed within the context of the legal and regulatory landscape.
Campus police and security personnel, municipal law enforcement with a connection to institutions of higher education, student conduct professionals, Title IX coordinators and investigators, counseling and women’s center professionals, prosecutors, mental health professionals, victim advocates, residence life staff, and other interested campus or community personnel.
Partial in-service credit for law enforcement officers, campus security officers and private security is available.
