Course Length: 24 hours
This training is intended to prepare the participant to comprehensively examine a school’s physical environment for crime vulnerabilities. Utilizing Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design principles, coupled with Situational Crime Prevention and the Rational Choice Theory, this course provides a unique understanding of how the environment impacts crime in the school. This course provides instruction on the DCJS Virginia Center for School Safety Standardized School Checklist to begin to identify vulnerabilities, suggest solutions, and prepare a comprehensive report. This training provides practical suggestions for K-12 institutions. A prior working knowledge of CPTED is desired but not required.
1. To build upon the existing knowledge base of participants in application of conducting school security surveys.
2. To provide a foundation from which comprehensive security surveys may be produced.
3. To ensure the participant has sufficient knowledge of the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design to make application of them in security surveys.
4. To provide relevant information pertaining to the most recent changes in statute relative to school security checklists.
5. To provide Virginia’s “Checklist” and relevant training towards compliance.
Size of Class: 30
Laptop computer, Pen and paper required. A digital camera is desired but not required. A compact disk for use on Windows operating systems will be provided participants. If desired, the student may bring a thumb drive to have materials transferred in lieu of the compact disk.
Partial In-Service credits of 23.5 hours has been awarded by the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy. Transfer of Credit to non-academy members will be available.
Tuition and Cost:
There is no cost to attend this course; however participants are responsible for their own travel, lodging and meals.
