This training course will assist local schools officials and law enforcement to understand how building security and crime prevention through building design (CPTED) can support school safety and assist in conducting School Safety Inspections. The training will explore options for complying with § 22.1-140. Code of Virginia: Plans for buildings to be approved by division superintendent that has been amended with the following new language pertaining school building plans: (iii) have been reviewed by an individual or entity with professional expertise in building security and crime prevention through building design. Schools divisions are invited to send teams of two to four school administrators and school-based law enforcement personnel to participate in the training.
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) describes how the physical environment impacts school safety and security. The training will be conducted at local schools to allow participants to use the DCJS School Safety Inspection Checklist to conduct a walk around inspection of school design features and management practices that support or detract from school safety and security.

This training is designed for local school officials and local law enforcement.
Partial In-service Credit
Law enforcement officers and security officers will receive 8 PIC hours. Please note: PIC hours are an estimate and may change due to unforeseen circumstances. This course also qualifies for 8 hours of training credit for Crime Prevention Specialist Certification.

There is no fee to attend this training.

Pre-registration is required. Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
