The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) in collaboration with the Virginia State Police is pleased to announce that it will host 2 - day intensive trainings entitled “Preparation and Response to Civil Disorders.” Law enforcement officers face unique challenges when responding to civil disturbances in their communities. Civil unrest and violent extremism have been at the center of many news stories across the nation and Virginia has certainly experienced first-hand the propensity for violence and disorder. Home grown violent extremists and identified hate groups often promote their agendas through legally protected speech, however, their actions often lead to threats to officer safety and the public. It is critical law enforcement personnel not only receive training on individual groups but on appropriate responses.
These 2-day trainings will bring together experts in the field to discuss best practices in preparing and responding to these incidents. Day 1 of the training will be presented by Dr. John More and will address Legal and liability parameters for preparation and response to civil disturbances. Day 2 will be feature a presentation from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and local law enforcement personnel addressing multiple agency response and by the Virginia State Police on the lessons learned from Charlottesville. NOTE: DAY 2 IS LIMITED TO LAW ENFORCEMENT ONLY.
In addition, in advance of these 2 day trainings, DCJS is also offering a one-day session entitled “Introduction to Domestic Extremism and Hate Groups.” This course is presented by Detective Rob Finch of the Greensboro, N.C. Criminal Intelligence Unit and is being offered the day before three of these sessions.
