The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) in collaboration with Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite University, and James Madison University is pleased to announce that it will host a 1-day intensive training covering Title IX compliance, relevant Title IX updates, Trauma Informed Responsiveness, Clery and the Prevention of Campus Gender Based Violence. This training will feature presentations from multiple subject matter experts, and will be divided into three presentation blocks.
Presentations:
This session will focus on providing investigators with useful tools when preparing for and conducting investigations. It will also identify various issues that may arise during the investigation process, including ways in which investigators can use a trauma informed approach to an investigation without jeopardizing due process and other legal obligations.
Jess Balac serves as the Outreach and Prevention Coordinator at the Collins Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia, a nonprofit striving to eliminate sexual violence and it’s impacts through crisis services, counseling and advocacy work. Ms. Balac will discuss the effects of trauma on reporting parties and how to be trauma informed in our work, whether conducting interviews or serving as part of a Title IX or other conduct related university review process.
This session will explore effective practices to integrate the legal and regulatory framework related to sexual and gender-based harassment and violence, coordinate the institutional response, and build an effective compliance program. The presenters will explore the intersections between Title IX and Clery; effective practices in coordination, communication and documentation; and, provide a framework for navigating difficult decisions. The presenters will also discuss the impacts of recent due process court cases , the pending Title IX rulemaking process, and recent Title IX and Clery enforcement actions by the Department of Education.
Who Should Attend?
This 1-day intensive training class is designed for Virginia Title IX coordinators/deputy coordinators/investigators/review panel members/volunteers; campus police and campus security administrators and officers who have responsibility for conducting, assisting, or overseeing Title IX investigations and compliance on their Virginia college campuses; and Student Life staff.
Partial In-service Credit (PIC) for law enforcement officers and security officers will be available.

The training will begin at 9:00 AM and conclude at 4:00 PM

The Festival Student and Conference Center Ballroom is located in the “Skyline” area of campus.
Parking Lots C11, C12,D3, and the East Campus Parking Deck have been designated as the location for event parking on August 7, 2019 from 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM. No parking permit will be necessary for visitors. Visitors are encouraged to use Parking Services online parking map as a resource to familiarize themselves in advance with the designated lots (www.jmu.edu/parking/_files/parkingmap.pdf). Regular enforcement will continue in all other parking lots on campus and guest may receive parking citations if parked in restricted lots. Guests are prohibited from parking in specialty spaces such as Service Vehicle spaces, handicap spaces without proper permit, or expired timed spaces. Parking in fire lanes is also prohibited.
All parking regulations for JMU faculty and staff will remain in effect and students attending the event are required to park in the appropriate student parking lot with a valid JMU permit.
Cost and Registration
There is no registration fee to attend this training.
Pre-registration is required.
Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
