Human Trafficking Training Requirement for Colleges

Human Trafficking Training for Colleges

Code of Virginia § 23.1-808.1 mandates the governing board of each public institution of higher education to develop and implement policies requiring that a human trafficking awareness and prevention training program be provided to and completed by all first-year students as a part of the institution's first-year orientation program.

Private institutions of higher education are encouraged to provide a human trafficking training program as well.

There are two options that meet this training requirement:

  1. 1. The online course provided by DCJS at no cost; or

  1. 2. An alternative online or in-person course identified by the institution.

Implement the DCJS Training at Your Institution

Colleges and universities in Virginia have the ability to implement the DCJS online training campus-wide. Institutions can host the course on their own learning management system (LMS). This allows institutions to monitor student compliance and students will not have to create an account for an external LMS.

To implement the training at your institution, complete the end user agreement and submit it to collegetraining@dcjs.virginia.gov. DCJS will provide the course assets to be loaded on to your institutions LMS. DCJS only asks that institutions report the number of students who have completed the training during each semi-annual period.
