The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety, in conjunction with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce the following training opportunity to help behavioral threat assessment team members better recognize and respond to today’s challenges from worrisome digital content contained on varied social media platforms.  

Full-day training session Digital Threat Assessment® (DTA) teaches participants to establish a Digital Behavioral Baseline through a School Safety / Threat Assessment (SS/TA) lens. By engaging with popular social media applications, you will learn how to find and document worrisome digital content originating from your school community. This training solidifies your understanding of how to effectively use DTA as a critical part of any modern-day Threat Assessment. You will learn how to find individuals who are the subject of your threat assessment and document your research findings.

You will learn:

Application of Digital Threat Assessment® theoretical foundations

  • How the fundamental principles of Behavioral Threat Assessment apply to online digital data

  • Best practices for documenting and preserving crucial digital data

  • How to search within Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat

How to utilize the power of search engines and all investigative tools

  • To engage the power of Google and use Boolean search operator

  • How to configure Google Alerts for ongoing research

  • About the role of cached data in online research work

Online verification and authentication of images

  • To use online tools to determine whether a photo/image is likely unique or stock

  • How to screen capture and document online content for both evidentiary and school safety purposes

  • How to work with social media companies and utilize law enforcement guides to request user identifying information

Privacy

  • The difference between personal, professional, and research accounts

  • Consider privacy and policy implications of online research account use

  • To protect and safeguard your personal information online

  • To recognize the wealth of information that tech giants maintain about users (Google, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.)

The current state-of-affairs in social media: A safe school perspective

  • What we see from a local, national, and North American lens

  • How social media continues to impact the safety, culture, and climate of our schools

  • To establish a digital behavioral baseline and assessing the language of online threats

  • How to crowdsource localized and time relevant social media posts from your school and geographical area

  • To recognize the signs and implications of general vs. inordinate knowledge, including information on INCELs, doxing, swatting and the dark web

Who should attend?

This training is being offered to behavioral threat assessment team members at the school, division, and college campus level. This includes School Resource Officers, Law Enforcement Officers and School and Campus Security Officers. Other members of the school community such as school counselors, school psychologists, school social workers, and school nurses may also benefit from this training.

Partial In-Service Credit

Partial in-service credit is not available for virtual trainings.

Cost

There is no cost to the participant to attend this course. 

Registration and Training Details

  • The training will be offered virtually, and attendance is limited to 100 attendees.
  • The training will be hosted via Zoom.
  • Participants will receive the Zoom meeting link prior to the training.
  • Registrants should have previously attended the Fundamentals of Digital Threat Assessment Training.

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
