Description
Professionals from public institutions of higher education have been actively engaged in threat assessment and management programs since at least 2008, when the Virginia Assembly enacted legislation requiring all public IHE’s to implement and operate such programs. Since 2013, public schools have operated in accordance with similar statutory requirements. The Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety has provided a wide range of training to support school and campus threat assessment teams in serving the needs of their educational communities. To support continuous improvement of these teams, the Center continues to offer training opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills related to the practice of threat management in educational settings.
This workshop will provide opportunity for participants to:
- Learn and engage on topics impacting schools and campus that are not covered in foundational training sessions. These topics will focus on opportunities for greater collaboration, communication and coordination between schools and campuses where appropriate. Such topics may include, but not be limited to:
- Threat Assessment and Management: The Nexus Between School and Campus Settings
- Enhancing Information Sharing: Considerations for Practice
- Threat Assessment and Management Involving Intimate Partner Violence: Domestic/Dating Violence, Stalking, Predatory Sexual Assault/Misconduct and The Nexus of Threat Management and Title IX
- Practice application of skills and lessons learned through small group work on case scenarios addressing issues that may impact both schools and campuses.

The workshop is appropriate for members of school and campus threat assessment teams including (but not limited to) school/campus administrators, student services personnel, instructional staff, counseling and mental health professionals, human resource personnel, attorneys, and law enforcement and security personnel; as well as staff from regional community mental health and law enforcement agencies that may be involved in school or campus threat management efforts.
