The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce that it will host “Understanding and Conducting Lighting Assessments for Law Enforcement”. The ability to provide accurate measuring of lighting is important in prevention applications but may also be necessary in investigations when a crime or incident involves witness identification, or a case relies on confirming the ability to see clearly.
This one-day training is intended to introduce attendees to the application of security lighting at facilities and the appropriate methods for conducting law enforcement lighting assessments.
The course will provide the student with a foundational understanding of the lighting industry related to lighting for safety and security. We will examine ordinances, policies, and organizations impacting lighting today and design considerations for security lighting.
Students will be introduced to the use of light meters in conducting lighting assessments, as well as methods for conducting such assessments. This class will conclude with a night lighting exercise applying the lessons learned.

Lamps and their appropriate uses in choice for a security application.
Light meter usage.
Lighting assessment measuring procedure and charting.
This course is designed for any law enforcement agency staff tasked with, or who will be tasked with, conducting lighting assessments.
All students will be asked to download a light meter app for use in the final exercise and access should be made available to them on their smart phone. Those with department issued light meters may choose to bring them for use but should acquaint themselves with the specific functioning of the device prior to class.
Partial In-service Credit for law enforcement officers is available.
Registration begins at 11:30 a.m.
Training begins at 12:00 p.m. and concludes at 8:00 p.m.
Participants are responsible for their transportation, meals, and lodging arrangements and related expenses.
There is no registration fee to attend this training.
Pre-registration is required.
Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
