2024 Student Ambassador Program - School Safety Video

Students and staff are invited to showcase their efforts at making schools safer by creating and submitting a video of what school safety means to them. Select videos will be shown at the 2024 Virginia School Safety Training Forum and will be in the running for up to $1,000 for their school or division.

Who can participate?

PreK-12 public or private school students and staff.

What does each entry need to include?

  1. 30 second Video in web link(URL), MP4 or wav file format.
  2. Consent forms must be signed by guardians of all students involved.           

What are the prizes?

Submissions that are selected for inclusion in the Forum will be in the running for up to $1,000 for their school or division.

How should the videos be submitted?

Videos may be submitted online through the 2024 STUDENT AMBASSADOR VIDEO SUBMISSION FORM.

When is the deadline?

Submissions are due by 5:00pm, Friday, June 14, 2024.

How will the submissions be selected for inclusion in the Forum?

DCJS staff members will review and select submissions to be shown at the Forum.

Does a faculty or staff member need to sponsor the project?

Yes.

How many students can work on one video?

Unlimited.

What topic(s) should the video cover?

Topics specific to each grade level:

Elementary (PreK-5) Middle (6-8) High (9-12)
Whom do you go to for help in an emergency? Whom do you go to in times of crisis? What does leadership mean to you in times of crisis?
What makes you feel safe in your school? What are some things that positively or negatively affect your school climate? What are some things that positively or negatively affect your perception of your school’s climate?
What does it mean to be safe online? What does it mean to show respect? How do you tell when someone is respecting you? What does it mean to show respect? How do you tell when someone is respecting you?
What is something you practice during an emergency drill at school? If you thought a friend was going to hurt themselves, what might you do to help them? Why is suicide prevention important?
What do you need from your teachers during an emergency? What is the purpose of emergency drills at school? How is threat assessment important to the safety of your school?
When you get angry, what helps you calm down? What role does social media play in safety? How do people portray themselves differently on social media than in real life? How do people portray themselves differently on social media than in real life?  What role does social media play in safety?
D.A.R.E. What is bias? What is the impact of bias?
  When you get upset, how do you keep yourself in check?  (How do you keep from lashing out?) How do you de-escalate a tense situation?
  What does it mean to be accountable? How important are relationships in your safety?
