Extension

Businesses, training schools, and individuals can apply for a renewal extension according to 6VAC20-174-120 of the Regulations.

Eligibility

The following are the only circumstances for which extensions may be granted:

  • Extended illness;
  • Extended injury;
  • Military or foreign service; or
  • Any emergency temporary assignment of private security personnel for purposes of (i) natural disaster, (ii) homeland security or (iii) documented threat, by the private security services business or training school for which the individual is employed.

Submit to the Department

  1. Extension request form (PSS_ER).
  2. Written, dated and signed by the individual or principal or a licensed entity prior to the expiration date of the time limit required for completion of the requirements;
  3. Indicate the projected date of compliance in which the person, business, or training school will be able to comply with the requirements; and
  4. Copy of the official documentation of reason for extension request: physician's record of the injury or illness or a copy of the government orders.

Important Information

  1. No extension will be approved for registrations, certifications, or business licenses that have expired. This requirement may be waived by the department based on an evaluation of the justification for the waiver.
  2. Applications for additional extensions may be approved upon written request of the person, business, or training school. The total time for renewal extension, including additional extensions, shall not exceed 12 months beyond the original expiration date.
  3. The private security services person, business, or training school shall be non-operational during the period of extension unless otherwise issued a temporary exemption authorized by the department pursuant to §9.1-139 (L) of the Code of Virginia.
