Description:
The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce the upcoming 2-day “Investigation Foundations Level Two: Skills and Report Writing for Higher Education” training. This training and certification course builds on the concepts from "Title IX Investigation Foundations Level One: Procedures and Critical Skills for Higher Education" and focuses on refining skills in interviewing and post-interview tasks. Key areas of focus include credibility assessment, synthesizing information, and writing clear, comprehensive investigation reports.
Throughout this course, participants will receive sample investigation reports to help guide their understanding of report-writing mechanics, format, structure, and how to identify and include the necessary details in each section of a report. In addition, participants will have opportunities to engage in a variety of applied learning activities to practice their skills and receive feedback from ATIXA’s experts.
Learning Outcomes:
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Develop interview questions designed to elicit information that is relevant to a specific allegation.
- Explain how to apply the five factors to consider when assessing the credibility of information.
- Determine the information that should be included in each section of an investigation report.
- Identify problematic language in investigation reports and suggest effective remedies.
- Integrate various sources of evidence into investigation reports in a clear and logical manner.
- Implement best practices to protect participant privacy, including redaction strategies.
- Address gaps or the absence of specific evidence within investigation reports.
Who Should Attend?
This course is designed for Virginia Title IX coordinators, Title IX and Civil Rights investigators, campus law enforcement and campus security officers, hearing/process advisors, decision-makers, appeal decision-makers, human resources professionals, student conduct professionals, and legal counsel.
Partial In-service Credit:
Partial In-service Credit for law enforcement officers is available.
Training Time and Details:
Registration begins at 8:00 am
Training begins at 8:30 am and concludes at 5:00 pm each day
Travel, Lodging, and Meals:
Participants are responsible for their own transportation, meals, and lodging arrangements and related expenses.
Cost and Registration:
There is no registration fee to attend this training; however, pre-registration is required.
Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
