Description:

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce the “Firearms Trafficking Investigations” training presented by Professional Law Enforcement Training (PLET).

Gun crime suppression tactics are often conducted in a reactive manner by seizing firearms after a violent crime has been committed. Historically, firearms have also been seized after enforcement activity related to narcotic operations. While these types of seizures are important, it has become increasingly necessary to proactively target criminals involved in the illegal distribution of firearms.

In-depth case law will be presented covering the various state and federal firearm law violations that can be used to proactively target criminals. It is imperative that officers have a true understanding of the elements of each firearm law offense to ensure a successful prosecution.

Conducting interviews with witnesses, victims, and suspects is a critical component of firearm trafficking investigations. Detailed information will be presented on techniques for "interviewing the firearm” and utilizing appropriate questions that will aid in prosecuting the criminal.

This two-day training course will focus on all aspects of firearms trafficking. The participants will receive information on various types of common street weapons, pricing, and possible modifications.

Topics to be Covered Include:

  • Federal/State Firearm Laws Overview
  • NIBIN – Benefits of Tracing Firearms
  • Indicators of Firearm Trafficking
