The DCJS Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety is pleased to announce Kids and Cops Communicating: Brain Development, Trauma, Mental Health and De-escalation of Youth in Crisis for Public Safety Professionals. This one-day session will provide an overview of how adolescent brains develop and are impacted by trauma and mental health challenges. Recognizing signs of escalation, and causes of escalation in youth will discussed. Skills and tools for effectively and safely de-escalating young people experiencing a crisis will be presented along with an opportunity to participate interactive scenarios.
This session will be instructed by Dr. Jeff Aaron, Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, and Kim Simon, Department of Criminal Justice Services.
Law enforcement officers and school and campus security officers will receive partial in-service credit hours for this training.
Check in for training will begin at 7:30 am
Training will run from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
There is no fee to attend this training. Pre-registration is required.
Participants will be required to complete a Participant Screening and Waiver prior to attending the training. This will be emailed to registrants before the training and will also be available to complete at check-in on the day of the training.
