The DCJS Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety is pleased to announce a webinar titled “Information Sharing Guide for K-12 Public Schools” for educational leaders and their law enforcement partners. In this webinar, Dr. John More will provide participants with an engaging and in-depth look at what it takes to build an information sharing bridge between the school and law enforcement community. His strategic approach provides guidelines, coupled with key elements of Federal and Virginia law, with the goal of enhancing the ability of school and police personnel to share information in order to reduce risk to students, staff, and police personnel within the school environment and beyond. An overview to understanding and navigating the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) will also be provided.
The Information Sharing Guide for K-12 Public Schools provides detailed and practical guidance on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and how it relates to information sharing in the K-12 environment. This guide is broken down into three topical areas surrounding FERPA and sharing of student information. The first section addresses understanding and navigating FERPA. The second section looks at the role of mental health care providers. Finally, the third section explores the keys to making information sharing work through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The recently updated Model Memorandum of Understanding is also available on the DCJS website and reflects the requirement to update it every two years.
