Description
The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to announce Current Topics in School and Campus Safety: In-service for Campus and School Security Officers. This 2-day course will meet the 16-hour requirement for in-service training required for re-certification as a CSO or SSO. Day 1 will focus on legal topics, familiarize campus and K-12 security personnel on all risk-based situations with a focus on scene management, evidence preservation, cooperative investigation methods, and reporting strategies that are in compliance with Virginia law. Day 2 will start out with an overview of youth development, trauma and mental health issues, and round out with trends in youth substance use, addiction, and helping students identify and recognize behaviors that are harmful using active listening skills.
Day 1 of the course will be instructed by Dr. John More of Response Law. Day 2 will feature Dr. Jeff Aaron of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, and Dr. Linda Hancock – the Funny Nurse Practitioner and co-founder of the VCU Rams in Recovery Program.
Who Should Attend?
This course is intended to meet the in-service requirements for certified Campus Security Officers and certified School Security Officers. School Resource Officers and Campus law enforcement are also encouraged to attend.
Partial In-service Credit
Partial In-service Credit (PIC) for law enforcement officers and school/campus security officers will be available.
Travel, Lodging, and Meals
Transportation, lodging, and meals are the responsibility of the student.
Training Times and Details
Registration begins at 7:30 AM
Training will be from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM each day.
Cost and Registration
There is no registration fee to attend this training. Pre-registration is required.
Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
COVID-19 NOTICES
Participants will be required to complete a Participant Screening and Waiver prior to attending the training. This will be emailed to registrants before the training and will also be available to complete at check-in on the day of the training.
PLEASE NOTE: DCJS is preparing and planning to continue holding training sessions and conferences after a resumption of normal activities. Every effort will be made to hold this scheduled training, however, due to the uncertainty of the progression of the COVID-19, this training may require rescheduling. You will be notified by email if this training is rescheduled. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding.
