This one-day session on adolescent development, trauma, mental health, and de-escalation of youth in crisis will provide an overview of how adolescents (and their brains) develop and are impacted by trauma and mental health challenges. Recognizing signs of escalation, and causes of escalation in youth will discussed, and skills and tools for effectively and safely de-escalating young people experiencing a crisis will be presented along with an opportunity to explore analyze scenarios for each topical area. This workshop is designed to be interactive and thought provoking with each section anchored around a video or live scenario.
The session will be presented by Dr. Jeffrey Aaron, Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, and Kim Simon, Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, Division of Public Safety Training and School and Campus Safety.
