The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to offer "Homemade Explosives: Awareness, Recognition, and Response" training.

Description:

This course is designed to provide emergency first responders with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and respond to incidents involving Homemade Explosives (HME). Emergency first responders are presented with information on the identification of HME explosive precursor chemicals, HME manufacturing indicators, HME exposure indicators, and pre-detonation and post-detonation response actions. 

Throughout this course, emergency first responders discuss how to implement safe response strategies when recognizing the presence of HME indicators; understanding these response actions is critical to mitigating the hazards associated with HME.

Terminal Learning Objectives (TLOs):

  • Describe the processes and physical characteristics associated with explosive materials
  • Identify explosive precursor chemicals used in the making of homemade explosives
  • Identify manufacturing indicators associated with the production of homemade explosives
  • Identify various types of homemade explosives based on precursor materials and manufacturing indicators present at a scene
  • Recognize safe and effective responses to incidents involving homemade explosives
  • Recognize information necessary to increase awareness in the public and private sectors regarding homemade explosives in order to enhance prevention opportunities

Who should attend?

This training is intended for sworn law enforcement officers, school security officers, campus security officers, and any emergency first responders of all disciplines.

Partial In-service Credit:

Partial In-service Credit (PIC) for Virginia law enforcement officers is available for this course.

Travel, Lodging, and Meals:

Participants are responsible for their transportation, lodging arrangements, and expenses.

Training Time and Details:

Check-in will begin at 7:30 am, and the course will be held from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Cost and Registration:

There is no cost to attend this training; however, pre-registration is required.

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS-assigned course coordinator to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Denied registrants will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
