Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) training.  This training is designed to provide the latest information, resources, and tools in the area of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).  Crime Prevention through Environmental Design is based on the principle that proper design and effective use of buildings and public spaces can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime, and an improvement in the quality of life. The training is conducted through lecture and practical group exercises with teams conducting and reporting on security assessments of a variety of locations. 

Topics will include:

  • History of CPTED

  • Theory and Research

  • Principles and application

  • Lighting

  • Understanding and reviewing site plans

  • Conducting assessments

  • CPTED report writing

  • Practical exercises

Who should attend?

This training is intended for individuals that are responsible for providing crime prevention services or programs. This course is restricted to individuals working in local, state and federal law enforcement and government agencies, including colleges and universities, either sworn, civilian or volunteer. 

Partial In-service Credit

Law enforcement and school/campus security officers will receive partial in-service credit hours for this training.

Transportation, Lodging, and Meals

Participants are responsible for their transportation, lodging, and meal expenses.  

Training Times and Details

Registration begins at 7:30 AM

Training runs from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day

Cost and Registration

Pre-registration is required.  There is no cost to attend this training.

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
