Community Policing and Animal Protection/Police and Dog Encounters

Description

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services in partnership with The Humane Society of the United States is pleased to announce two training courses combined into a one day session, “Community Policing and Animal Protection" and "Police and Dog Encounters.”

Community Policing and Animal Protection:

Animals can play a critical role in fostering trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Building upon fundamental concepts of a community oriented policing model, this course will review relevant applications in animal protection, including tips for positive interactions, creative community partnerships and dynamic problem solving in the field.

Topics to be covered: 

  • Fundamentals for a successful community-centric program

  • Tips for funding and resource acquisition

  • Ways to establish or expand existing programs

Police and Dog Encounters:

Dogs are likely to be present during many calls for service. With a focus on officer safety, this course reviews how agencies can prepare to avoid the unnecessary shooting of a family pet.

Topics to be covered:

  • How animal encounters impact an agency

  • Contributing factors to negative interactions

  • Reading body language and how to appropriately approach dogs

  • Preparedness and relationship building

Target Audience:

This training is open to sworn law enforcement officers and animal service professionals.

Partial In-service Credit:

Partial In-service Credit for law enforcement officers is PENDING APPROVAL. If approved, you must be present for the duration of the course to receive credit. 

Travel, Lodging & Meals:

Participants are responsible for their transportation and lodging arrangements and expenses.

Training Time & Details:

Check in will begin at 7:30 a.m. and course will be held from 8:00AM– 5:00PM

Cost and Registration

There is no fee to attend this training. Pre-registration is required.

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.

PLEASE NOTE: DCJS is preparing and planning to continue holding training sessions and conferences after a resumption of normal activities. Every effort will be made to hold this scheduled training, however, due to the uncertainty of the progression of the COVID-19, this training may require rescheduling. You will be notified by email if this training is rescheduled. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding.
