The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the virtual training “Introducing Virginia HEAR–Helping Elders Access Resources” on July 16, 2024 at 10:00 a.m.
Session Description:
This webinar will showcase a new multimedia program developed by the Virginia Center on Aging. This solution-focused intervention is designed to prepare victim advocates and other allied professionals, caregivers, and community members to address and prevent elder abuse and create safer, more supportive communities.
Learning Objectives:
As a result of this training, attendees will be able to:
- Recognize elder mistreatment as a prevalent issue affecting all communities.
- Understand the dynamics of elder abuse and disrupt ageism.
- Identify various forms of elder abuse and learn protective measures.
- Respond appropriately to elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation with a community-focused approach.
- Recognize the power of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) to address elder abuse.
Presenters:
Courtney O'Hara co-directs the Elder Justice Learning & Resource Hub at VCU's Virginia Center on Aging. Courtney takes on a statewide leadership role in elevating the Commonwealth's response to elder mistreatment. She develops and facilitates training and technical assistance for those working in various professions, to include criminal justice, aging services, and health care. Courtney has over 20 years of experience in the field of domestic violence through advocacy, prevention, community outreach, training, and education. In the past, her work has included direct victim services, increasing offender accountability, implementing community programming, and enhancing services for older survivors of abuse and neglect.
She currently serves as President of the Virginia Coalition for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and sits on numerous boards and coalitions focusing on gender-based violence.
Credits: No credits are being offered for this training. A certificate of attendance will be provided to participants who attend the session.
