The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to announce a webinar series focused on mental health topics relevant to K-12 schools. The webinars will address five common mental health topics for school personnel.
This training is intended for K-12 and IHE educators, school mental health personnel, school and campus security personnel, prevention providers, law enforcement, probation officers, school and campus administration, treatment professionals, counselors, student conduct professionals, prosecutors, residence life staff, and other interested school, campus or community personnel.
Partial In-service Credit (PIC) for law enforcement will NOT be offered. Credit for school and campus security officers WILL be available.
The presenter will utilize her expertise and experience working with childhood trauma to provide an overview of trauma and how to respond to the behaviors exhibited by children who have experienced (or are experiencing) trauma. She will provide practical information on working with children and coping with trauma and during the transition back to “normal” school and work routines.

Dr. Gene Deisinger will provide an overview of the process and purpose of the Behavioral Threat Assessment for schools and the role of school mental health personnel in that process. A focus will be on identifying students on the pathway to harming others or themselves. Practical strategies for supporting these students in crisis will be examined.
This session will provide an in-depth look at the stigma and assumptions pertaining to youth substance use as well as the impact on brain development, psychological, social and emotional development, and risk factors to watch for. Primary and secondary prevention strategies will be discussed as well as their application in alternatives to school suspension. Participants will take away ideas and strategies that can be used for strategic planning in their school/agency setting.
This session will provide an overview of signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression in youth and strategies for supporting those identified students. Tier 1, 2, and 3 supports will be discussed.
In this session, participants will learn the risk factors and warning signs, know how to talk with youth at risk, and gain an understanding of suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. Practical strategies to use with at-risk youth will be provided as well as ideas to use for strategic planning around suicide prevention in the school setting.
There is no fee to attend these webinars. Pre-registration is required. The webinars will be hosted via Zoom.
Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course.
