Police and Community Relations: Understanding Cultural and Diverse Populations

Description

The DCJS Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety is pleased to offer England Consulting’s “Police and Community Relations: Understanding Cultural and Diverse Populations”.

This course explores the relationship of the police to the community including the role of police in contemporary society; abuses of discretion; past, present and future trends in policing; problem identification and solving; and ethical issues facing policing in a free society.  An effective police-community relations program is one which deals with the prevailing problems of the agency's community. Program aspects including public relations, crime prevention efforts, youth programs, and police-community relations training must be considered in any comprehensive evaluation. One of the fundamental keys to successful law enforcement is good police-community relations, or the relationship between the police and the communities they serve. Good police-community relations are imperative for developing trust between police and citizens.

Topics to be discussed:

  • Understanding Generations, Society and Current Culture

  • Implementation of Community-Oriented Policing (COP)

  • Community Engagement, Shared Influence and Priority Setting

  • Decision Making, Problem Solving, Discretion and Evaluation

  • Case Studies
