Description: 

 

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to announce the “School Security Officer (SSO) Instructor Certification Course. This three-day class is intended for SSO/SSO Supervisors who wish to become certified to instruct the required DCJS SSO Initial Certification Curriculum in accordance with 6VAC20-240-20 for their school division and who do not yet meet the prior instructional training requirement. 

 

During this course, attendees will develop instruction, facilitation, and presentation skills as they work through the five modules. Participants will also be introduced to the required testing, remediation, and reporting processes to ensure fidelity with the training program across Virginia, consistent with DCJS requirements. To successfully complete the course, candidates must attend the entire session and give a brief presentation on the final day. Additional details will be provided at the start of the class.

 

Intended Audience: 

 

This course is open only to individuals currently employed by a Virginia public school division or a K-12 private school who already meet all other requirements for certification as listed in 6VAC20-240-70 and must also be approved by their Superintendent or designee. 

 

NOTE: This class is NOT intended for currently certified SSO Instructors or individuals contracted to serve as SSOs from a private security company. 

 

Training Details: 

 

The training hours for all training days will be 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.  Registration will begin on Tuesday at 7:30 AM 

 

Partial In-Service Credit (PIC): 

 

Partial In-service Credit (PIC) is not available for School Security Officers.  Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate of attendance for 24 in-service training hours.

 

Travel, Lodging, and Meals: 

 

Participants are responsible for their transportation, lodging, and meals.  

 

Registration and Cost:

 

Pre-registration is required.  There is no cost to attend this training. 

 

Please Note: Participants must complete a pre-course application, which must be signed by their school division superintendent or designee. 

 

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. It is the responsibility of the DCJS-assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
