The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety (VCSCS) is pleased to announce the following training opportunity regarding legal considerations for K-12 Behavioral Threat Assessment (BTAM) Team members.
This training will support efforts to provide effective, defensible, and sustainable threat management for all school safety stakeholders.
The session will feature:
• Privacy issues and the requirements for FERPA and HIPAA
• Disclosure of student information related to threatening/concerning behaviors
• Implications of legislation and litigation (e.g., Cleveland v. Taft Union High School Dist., 76 Cal. App.5th 776 (2022)) on school and campus threat management team operations
• Rights, responsibilities, and influence of parents in the BTAM process
Who Should Attend:
This training is offered to Behavioral Threat Assessment Team members at the K-12 school and division levels, including school resource officers and law enforcement officers, as well as school counselors, school psychologists, school social workers, and special education case managers.
Partial In-Service Credit:
Partial In-Service Credit (PIC) for law enforcement officers will not be available.
Training Time and Details:
Training begins at 9:30 am and ends at 11:30 am.
Cost and Registration:
There is no registration fee to attend this training. Pre-registration is required.
Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS-assigned course coordinator to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Denied registrants will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
