Description
The course aims to provide a foundational understanding of the theory and practice of crime prevention and other proactive policing approaches. The training will prepare participants to understand and deliver basic crime prevention services when they return to their home communities. The training is conducted through lecture, group exercises, and practical group exercises with teams conducting and reporting on security assessments of a variety of locations.
The course meets the requirement for a Basic Crime Prevention course as established in the requirements for Crime Prevention Specialist certification in Virginia. This training is intended for individuals who may be responsible for any aspect of providing crime prevention services or programs. Those with an interest in the fields of proactive policing, school safety, and campus safety will also benefit from this course. This course is restricted to individuals working in local, state, and federal law enforcement and government agencies, including colleges and universities, either sworn, civilian, or volunteer.
Course Objectives
- To provide crime prevention practitioners with introductory and essential information on the theory and practice of opportunity-based crime prevention, while providing instruction on trends and updates on other safety and security topics.
- To provide or build upon the crime prevention knowledge base of course participants and to assist them in meeting the training requirements for Crime Prevention Specialist certification.

Who Should Attend:
This training is open to sworn law enforcement officers, school and campus security officers, and civilians or volunteers working in local, state, and federal law enforcement and government agencies, including colleges and universities.
Partial In-service Credit
Partial In-service credit for law enforcement is available.
Travel, Lodging, and Meals
Transportation, lodging, and meals are the responsibility of the participant.
Training Times
Sign-in begins on Monday at 7:30 AM
Training begins at 8:00 AM and concludes at 5:00 PM each day.
Cost and Registration:
There is no fee to attend this training; however, pre-registration is required.
Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS-assigned course coordinator to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Denied registrants will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
