The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, in partnership with The Humane Society of the United States, is pleased to announce this virtual training titled, “Animal Cruelty Investigations 101: Fundamentals for a Successful Case”.

The Humane Society of the United States’ Law Enforcement Training Center trains thousands of law enforcement officers each year on the investigation and prosecution of illegal animal cruelty and fighting crimes. Trainers are former and current law enforcement and experts in enforcing animal protection laws. This course will cover the fundamentals of animal cruelty investigations, including their co-occurrence with violent crime and how to assess potential violations of Virginia law.

Topics to be covered: 

  • Background on illegal animal abuse in Virginia 

  • Link between animal abuse and other violent crimes 

  • Investigating cruelty complaints, from first response to filing charges 

  • Recognizing key evidence, warrants, statements 

Who should attend?

This training is open to sworn law enforcement officers.

Partial In-service Credit

Law enforcement officers who complete this training are eligible to receive partial in-service credit hours. You must be present for the duration of the course to receive credit.
